Brain in Overdrive

Have you ever thought about doing something but instead let your brain overthink about all of the things that could go wrong and so you never ended up taking that first leap? If your hand isn’t up then I want to meet you. I think every single one of us, at one time in our life or another, has experienced this…at least once!

The reality is, sometimes we let our minds get carried away with the “what-ifs” that we end up missing out on a really amazing opportunity in life. Sometimes, instead of thinking about all the what-ifs, we need to take a leap of faith and dive in headfirst. Before I say anything else, I don’t want this blog post to be taken the wrong way. I am not saying that being impulsive or saying yes to something without thinking it through is the right way to go, although sometimes I am reallllly good at being impulsive!!

What I am trying to get at is that being too cautious can mean that you will miss out on some incredible opportunities.

Don’t allow excessive caution or an overthinking brain stop you from doing something that you want to do. I’ve seen it happen so many times – people are so eager and ready to do something that they’ve always wanted to do, but then they allowed their brain to trick them into thinking that it won’t work out, or that they don’t deserve it, or that they can wait until later to do it….the excuses are ENDLESS!!!

I’ll give you an example from my life. I’ve always had a huge fear of getting laser eye surgery. Like, I could NOT do it. I would book appointments to go in for consultations and end up cancelling them because I would start imagining all of the horror stories about laser eye surgery and I just couldn’t do it. It was a constant battle because Tim had gotten his eyes done and he was SO happy with the results. I saw the success right in front of me but all my brain would do when I booked an appointment for myself was yell, “CANCEL IT”.

Our brains can do crazy things. The facts are right in front of us about how we will succeed and we know that if we just take the leap, things will work out great but that doesn’t change the fact that we let random wild thoughts stop us. We all need to take a deep breath and just take the plunge. Don’t let your brain overthink things, don’t let yourself run away from what you know is good for you. It may be scary, it may be hard – but there are rewards waiting on the other side!!

It wasn’t until I started putting this into practice – taking the leap, ignoring the brain going into overdrive, that I was finally able to go in and get my laser eye surgery. And guess what? My eyes are better than ever!! I had an amazing procedure and I LOVE waking up without having to put glasses on. Don’t let yourself psych yourself out. Take the plunge, do things that you know are good for you and even if it’s hard to ignore that brain inside your head telling you to run the other way, keep pushing forward. You’ll be so glad you did!
