How I Began to Shape My Own Story and How You Can Too

Add a heading

I’m just going to give you the punchline right from the get go because it’s too important for anyone to miss. Secret #1: The best person to shape your story is you.

WHHHHAAT?!

I know it sounds too obvious but believe me, there are a lot of people out there who don’t realize this. I sure didn’t for a long time! We get so caught up in looking around at what other people are doing in their lives that we forget that we have the power to shape our own.

This leads me to secret #2: The biggest hurdle towards shaping your story is yourself.

I learned many years ago that when you worry about what other people think, you cannot be effective in shaping your own story. Being pre-occupied by what other people might think about you will cause you to question your dreams, your abilities and your actions.

Don’t let your fear of what others might think rob you of freedom. There is so much freedom when you make choices that align with your dreams instead of someone else’s.

So, how do you start shaping your own story? I always start by saying: stop comparing yourself to others. You will care deeply about what other people think of you if you are always comparing yourself to them.

Did you know that wishing you could look like someone, act like someone or be confident like someone all undermine your own confidence? Comparison makes you think you’re not good enough or that you’ll never be enough. Your understanding of who you are and what you can achieve can only be strengthened when you stop comparing yourself to others.

While you’re stopping that bad habit of comparison, I recommend starting a new, very good habit: focus on your own growth. When you’re not comparing yourself to others and instead focusing on how you can improve, you will start to see drastic changes happen.

I started focusing on my own growth many years ago when I made the choice to start shaping my own story, regardless of what people thought of me. I stopped worrying about what others were doing and worked on areas in my life that needed improvement.  My business thrived under this new mindset and it continues to shape how I live today.

Are you ready to take control of how your story goes? Maybe there are some bad habits that need to be broken in order to fully connect with who you are and what you were made for. Making these changes will be the ultimate key to your success. It’s never too late to start!

Connect the Dots

Start shaping your story this week by choosing 1 area where you would love to see improvement in your life. Take a moment to reflect on a plan to grow. Write it down in a journal if you’d like.

Remember: this is your life that you are shaping so make it as specific and unique to you as possible! You are like nobody else on the planet and your story is being shaped by you alone!
