How to Start Living Outside of Your Comfort Zone and Like It

I’ll be honest with you. Nobody likes being out of their comfort zone. That’s why we call it “comfort zone” in the first place! It’s the zone where you feel most comfortable and that’s a nice feeling! Being out of your comfort zone doesn’t always feel nice and you won’t necessarily like it, but I can guarantee you will like the results of being out of your comfort zone.

I’m going to tell you 3 results that you will see when you step out of your comfort zone and ways to start living out of your comfort zone today! There are so many benefits to stepping out of your comfort zone but these are the top ones that I believe are essential.

Result 1 – Stepping out of your comfort zone will teach you new things

If you feel like something is out of your comfort zone and you are scared to try it, chances are it is something you have never done before. When you step out of your comfort zone, you will undoubtedly learn something new from the experience.

We never stop learning. You can be sure that every situation that involves stepping out of your comfort zone will give you new insights and help you grow!

Result 2 – Stepping out of your comfort zone will build your happiness and confidence

Nothing builds your confidence like realizing you can do something you initially thought you couldn’t do. When you step out of your comfort zone, you are telling yourself that you believe in your abilities. You believe in yourself. When you build confidence, you also develop happiness because they go hand in hand.

When you are confident in who you are, true freedom can be found. Stepping out of your comfort zone is a step by step path towards building your confidence and happiness.

There may be times where you fail outside of your comfort zone. It may make you feel a bit insecure at the time but in the long run failure is the best way to grow and lead to success in the future.

Result 3 – Stepping out of your comfort zone will get easier

As you practice stepping out and facing your fears, you will start to see that it becomes easier with time and experience because you will know how to handle those feelings.  You may find some things that once seemed to loom over you like a cloud of fear don’t make you feel that way anymore. You may even enjoy it!!

You will be able to master them instead of letting them master you.

Allow yourself to appreciate the difficulty of stepping out, that’s part of being human, but never let it stop you from stepping out fully. You were made for so much more and stepping out of your comfort zone gives you that!

So, how can you start living outside your comfort zone?

1 – Remember the results

For starters, remind yourself of the 3 results that will happen when you do step out of your comfort zone! They are all very good things and it helps to remember that there are some benefits to facing your fears! It’s not all bad!!

2 – Pinpoint the fear

If you’re trying something new and out of your comfort zone, take a moment to reflect on what it is that feels uncomfortable. When you pinpoint what is causing the “comfort zone alarm” to go off, then you can focus on overcoming that.

For example, almost everybody I know feels like public speaking is out of their comfort zone. Some people even get flustered just at the thought of it! If you don’t like public speaking, come up with the reasons why. Maybe your reasons are because you are scared to say something silly in front of a large group, or that people might not enjoy your talk. Or maybe you’re just plain scared of having sweaty armpits!

Whatever the reason, if you can pinpoint what causes you the most discomfort, then you can focus on overcoming those specific feelings. That might mean having a pep talk with yourself, or practicing a bit more, or buying a new stick of deodorant that guarantees 24 hour dryness!! A lot of times our fears happen because we feel unprepared. Preparation goes a long way.

3 – Focus on what you love

Along with pinpointing the fear, take a moment to write down some of the things that you enjoy doing (or perhaps you could imagine yourself enjoying) in this “out-of-the-comfort-zone adventure”. Find the things that excite you and it will help minimize the fear. You’ll have something to look forward to rather than dread!

Continuing with the public speaking example, maybe you really enjoy meeting new people and connecting with others. Maybe you love a specific topic that you could talk about all day with your friends. Or, maybe you just like buying a new outfit for a special occasion (I know I do!).

Get excited by focusing on the things you love and prepare for the things you don’t. Bring in some positive energy to counteract the nerves.

By taking the time to acknowledge the thing that scares you and the things you love, you are equipping yourself for a successful out-of-the-comfort-zone adventure. It takes practice and preparation to step out of your comfort zone. But I can guarantee you that it is worth it.

Connect the Dots

At the start of each month, write down one thing that is outside your comfort zone. Each day of that month, work towards stepping out. Make the necessary preparation and reflections to ease the transition out of your comfort zone. At the end of the month, evaluate how it went and decide if you want to continue working on the same thing the next month or if you’re ready to step out in a new way.
