Number 2: Be Coachable: The 5 Habits of a Successful Business Owner

Welcome back to the second blog post in my 5 part series on the Habits of a Successful Business Owner! I hope that your week was a good one and that you found ways to practice the first habit (Be Fearless!) throughout your week. I love that we can go on this journey together through these 5 habits and I know that while I write about these things I am reminded myself of things I am still learning! That’s why I am so excited to write about the second habit for this week: Be coachable.

No matter how high up you get in your business or how successful you seem to others, I believe that everyone should still maintain a coachable attitude because there is always something you can learn from someone else. But what exactly does it mean to be coachable? I think most of us can agree that we know we don’t know everything, but some of us can handle this information better than others. This is step 1 in the coachable process: Accept that you don’t know everything.

Once you’ve accepted the fact that you don’t know everything, you can start becoming a coachable person. Someone who is coachable is able to handle advice, criticism, praise, etc. well when others offer it to her/him. A coachable person finds value in other people’s perspective. I don’t think this means you must take every single person’s advice and use it to change what you’re doing (let’s face it, there’s a lot of opinions out there!), but being coachable means that you are able to listen to someone’s perspective without disregarding what they are saying entirely.

Being coachable means to listen well and to hear people’s thoughts out but it also means to take action if necessary. There may be an area in your life that requires you to make a change based on what someone points out to you. Making these changes might be crucial to becoming more successful in your business or personal life. Being coachable means have the willingness and openness to change.

When you are working in your business as a leader, being open with those that work with you and for you about your openness to hear feedback, your desire to improve, and your ability to accept difficult criticism will all be qualities that are highly admired by others. These are things that every strong leader should work towards!

Being coachable is something you should always practice in your business, no matter how far along you get or how high your business climbs. We can always learn more. Being open to hearing feedback on how you or your business can grow is something that I am always asking in my business, and I recommend for you too!

Let me know of some tips and tricks you’ve learned for yourself about how to be more coachable. I’d love to hear about your experience in the comments below!
